Why Canoryn is a native Mac app

The AI apps on your Mac are mostly web browsers in disguise. We measured what that costs, and built the other kind.

The companies building the most capable models on earth ship them to your Mac inside a web browser. Cursor, the Claude app and ChatGPT's current app each carry their own copy of Chromium. That's a reasonable trade for them — one codebase, every platform — but your Mac pays for it.

We measured it on 28 September 2026, using each vendor's current macOS installer and the app as it sits in Applications:

AppRuntimeDownloadInstalled
Canoryn 0.6.0Swift, AppKit, SwiftUI46 MB106 MB
Cursor 3.22.7Electron292 MB1,009 MB
Claude 2.9939.2Electron356 MB923 MB
ChatGPT 26.924Bundled Chromium runtime677 MB1,600 MB

Canoryn and Claude are universal apps (Apple silicon and Intel in one); Cursor and ChatGPT are Apple silicon only — so Canoryn is the smallest while carrying two architectures.

What native buys you

Size is the easy number. The more important difference is what you can build when the app speaks the platform's own language:

  • A real editor. Canoryn's code editor is built on TextKit 2, the text system Apple's own apps use. The file the agent is working in shows its edits as they land, and it stays smooth on long files.
  • Real browsers and terminals on a canvas. Every browser node is a WebKit page; every terminal is a real shell. They keep running while you do something else.
  • Your keys stay in your Keychain. Canoryn talks to your model provider directly, with no proxy of ours in the middle.
  • Local when you want it. Point it at Ollama and the whole loop — prompts, code, output — stays on your Mac.

What it costs us

One platform. Canoryn is Mac only, and it will stay that way; around 340,000 lines of Swift are written for this one platform on purpose. We think the people who care about their Mac feeling like a Mac are worth building for.
